Last week, Denim Therapy had the opportunity to interview actress Rosario Dawson, who served as host of Kitson’s annual “Women’s Night” shopping event. The actress was in demand that evening, but she was a pro. The event served to launch the new G-Star x Kitson capsule collection. We’ve heard Rosario is a long-time fan of G-Star, but we had to hear it from this charming actress herself, whose portrayal of the gritty leader of a prostitute gang in “Sin City” is so unlike her persona in the flesh.
Why did you choose to support G-Star?
Gosh. I remember first seeing some G-Star jeans in New York years ago. And there was this jacket with a hood, and some top and some pants. There was an outfit I saw that reminded me of a traditional Korean dress and how it ballooned around the back. It was simply gorgeous. And these jeans I’m wearing (she pinches her shin), they are the Arc Super Skinny. Very comfortable. I actually don’t like hard jeans. I love these [jeans]. They look different on you than they do on the rack don’t they? I don’t know. I love everything about G-Star.
Wow, that’s quite an endorsement. I know you have to go, so quickly, when you travel, how do you pack your jeans?
I roll them. My mom sometimes helps me pack. We’re Puerto Rican. We roll. (She chuckles.)
You kid us! So then, how many pairs of jeans do you own?
You mean just G-Star alone? (She pauses for a second to think.) Gee, maybe over 40 pairs. Is that too much?

Rosario Dawson is living a dream with her starring role in Zookeeper. Dawson always wanted to be a veterinarian, but unfortunately she’s allergic to almost every animal out there. As she says, that is just one of the benefits of the career choice she made as she can pretend to be what she always wanted to be, but for whatever reason, could not.
Zookeeper also marks one of the few times Rosario Dawson has appeared in a comedy. The star of such hits as Unstoppable, Seven Pounds, Grindhouse and Sin City welcomed the opportunity to show her funny side opposite Kevin James. She never hesitated in going for the joking jugular opposite one of entertainment’s most popular funnymen.
Dawson has come a long way since she was discovered at 15 sitting on her New York City stoop. Dawson told us in November about her dream to be an actress and the words almost prove prophetic considering her role in Zookeeper is congruent with her efforts to grow professionally.
“I was really insecure about [being an actress] for so many years. I couldn’t call myself an actor for a long time. I just thought I was lucky,” Dawson said. “I kept constantly waiting to have to get a real job [laughs]. It never did [happen], and that is really amazing.”
Well, consider Dawson fortunate to add another experience to her long and building resume, that of comic actress.
In Zookeeper, Dawson portrays the zoo veterinarian who is close friends with James’ title character. In his effort to woo back his love (Leslie Bibb) who broke his heart, Dawson agrees to appear to be his girlfriend to make her jealous. Does it work? And perhaps, does Dawson’s vet have feelings for the zookeeper herself? You’ll find out when Zookeeper arrives in theaters July 8.
We hear that being an actress isn’t the easiest career.
So, what do you call someone who can play an HIV-infected stripper and a bubbly zoo employee flawlessly?
Rosario Dawson.
If you’re a dude, you might know her from Sin City, if you’re a lady, maybe Rent or Seven Pounds, and if you have smoked a little marijuana in your day, perhaps Clerks II.
And now she is starring in the sure-to-be Blockbuster hit, Zookeeper, along with the likes of Kevin James, Leslie Bibb and The Hangover’s Ken Jeong.
When we sat down with her recently one-on-one in Miami, we had to know, for a girl who had been in New York City just a few hours before, what are five things she just cant live without?
Ear Plugs: They are a key element on a plane. It just takes the noise down, especially when you’re trying to rest. Even when I’m not sleeping, I can just read and just avoid the announcements and everything. I just love them.
Evian Mist: Spray of some kind just to moisturize. Evian, or Jurlique makes one with rose water, which is really nice. Serums are really good for the plane too. When you’re always in a plane, you have to moisturize a lot more.
Coffee: I have started drinking coffee more, which I usually don’t. It’s really calming to me. If my stomach is bothering me, it’s great. It really doesn’t make me jittery. Sometimes I drink it before I got to bed, actually. There’s something about it that just makes me feel good.
iPad: I’m just obsessed.
iCade: It’s a little machine that looks like an arcade game. It’s miniature; you put your iPad in it and then you can work the joy stick. It’s amazing. Thank God it’s portable.
Brotherhood/Sister Sol, an organization founded in 1995 to support black and Latino youth in under-resourced communities, recently held it’s annual fund-raising event called Voices 7. The star-studded evening in Manhattan featured a silent auction, a cocktail reception and a special poetic performance from Lyrical Circle. Voices 7 also included special awards for people who have shown faith and dedication towards Brotherhood/Sister Sol’s goals. Among the honorees were the cutest mayor who was ever cute, the Honorable David Dinkins.
Madame Noire was there to capture all of the action and we got to catch up with gorgeous actress Rosario Dawson, super talented journalist Soledad O’Brien and intellectual powerhouse Dr. Cornel West. Check out the video below and be sure to catch the adorable end of the video! We LOVE Rosario!
Rosario Dawson is no stranger to activism. She grew up around people who inspired her, like her friend, trans advocate and East Village legend Chloe Dzubilo (RIP) and her family, whom she calls “a source of wisdom and support.” She serves on the board of Eve Ensler’s VDAY project, supports several human rights organizations, is active with the Lower East Side Girls Club and co-founded Voto Latino. Now, she’s adding to her roster of environmental efforts by speaking up about the need to preserve our world’s water supply.
What are the main issues that you’re working on with Water Defense?
Though we have access to taps and toilets here in the United States we are not exempt from [the contaminated water] problem. Our water is becoming increasingly polluted and we are getting sicker for it. The main issue we’re tackling is fracking, short for hydraulic fracturing, which is a dangerous form of drilling for natural gas. We’re trying to keep fracking out of our watersheds and our communities as well as debunk the myth that natural gas is a cleaner form of energy than coal.
Can you explain fracking? It seems like a complicated issue.
Fracking is a process of natural gas drilling. It requires blasting water, toxic chemicals and sand underground into rock formations to crack them apart and release the gas. It contaminates the water wells of homes and communities, such that people can light their tap water on fire; and it also produces billions of gallons of wastewater, water that is not treatable, that ends up getting dumped into rivers and streams. On top of that, the process of fracking actually causes earthquakes! The pressure of all that water and drilling horizontally has caused unnatural, man-made earthquakes.
Until the laws to protect our water are reinstated, we have to ban the process of fracking. Ban it now, before it destroys more homes and families.
Can you tell us a bit about [what else] is important to you now?
I just want people to know their rights and their power. Often I get people registered [through Voto Latino] just by pointing out that if taxes have been taken from their paychecks or when they were buying those new sneakers they’re wearing, that they’re already engaged in the political system. Why not take it to the next step and participate in the process that allows you to vote where that tax money goes!? Our government and representatives work for us! We’re their boss.
What advice or message would you send to young people who are interested in taking action or getting involved?
Follow your passion and get informed, get mad, inspired, then get involved! Go to www.waterdefense.org to get involved. We can ban fracking and save our water if we come together right now. Please, too, register at www.VotoLatino.org and VOTE!
